Seminole Tribe of Florida - Emergency Management Department

A message from Jerry Wheeler, Chief Public Safety Officer

Living in Florida is often described as living in paradise. While many of us will agree with that description, we also recognize that Florida is vulnerable to numerous natural and man-made perils. This All Hazards Guide was developed to prepare and assist our Seminole Tribe of Florida Departments and Tribal Members with their disaster planning. In it, you will find information on the typical hazards that we can be faced with. You will also find guidance and information on the resources that are available to help prepare you for the effects of these hazards and to help you in your recovery when disaster strikes.

The Office of Public Safety includes the Seminole Police Department, the Department of Fire Rescue, the Aviation Department and the Department of Emergency Management. All of the personnel within these departments are dedicated to providing for the safety and welfare of the entire Seminole Tribe community. Within the Department of Emergency Management, in the past year we have assembled a new team of highly experienced professionals whose mission is to effectively plan for the variety of hazards that can affect us and to lessen their impact during a disaster or emergency situation. In the next few months, several initiatives will be launched that will greatly enhance our preparedness and response capabilities. We also will be conducting a comprehensive program of public education to inform Seminole Tribe Departments and Tribal Members on preparedness strategies and the resources that are available to them.

I encourage you to review this All Hazards Guide with your family and friends. Please feel free to contact any of the Seminole Tribe of Florida Departments that are listed within this All Hazards Guide if you need additional information or assistance.

This guide was developed to assist you in preparing your family and property for the variety of potential risks associated with severe weather and other hazards. Each of us has the ability to take the steps that will lessen the burden of a disaster’s impact on ourselves and our communities.

Remember the 3 R’s of preparing for a disaster:

  • Understand the Risks
  • Know your Responsibilities
  • Know what to expect in a Recovery situation

Please review the following information and prepare your Family’s Disaster Plan today. Emergency supplies should be obtained in quantities that will last you for a minimum of 3 days to as long as 2 weeks. Remember to keep this guide in a convenient location and refer to it as needed.

As you are aware, South Florida is prone to severe weather, wildfires, flooding, drought and numerous other natural and technological hazards. The impact of these events can seriously tax the emergency response organizations working to provide relief. Do your part so that aid can go first to those who are in desperate need.

To learn more about how you can help others in your community, contact the Office of Emergency Management for information on disaster volunteer opportunities, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), and special presentations.
